This weekend, in Illinois, fighting game competitors from all around the world faced off against each other at this year’s Combo Breaker. Combo Breaker is big deal tournament for several major games, and is a Tekken World Tour Master event in Tekken 7 as well as a Capcom Pro Tour Premier event in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. Both games saw registration numbers above 600 entrants.
Mortal Kombat 11 was the belle of the ball this year, closing out Sunday night’s events with more than 750 registered kombatants. Other popular events include Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Under Night In-Birth EXE: Late[st], both sitting at over 400 entrants. Dragon Ball FighterZ and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 had more than 300 entrants each, and Soul Calibur VI had about 250 participants. The fan-favorite Mystery Game Tournament saw 250 competitors sign up, and many more side event games had more than 100 players set to compete.
In Mortal Kombat 11‘s Grand Finals EchoFox’s legendary SonicFox and his Jacqui Briggs were defeated by Endemic’s Scar and his Sonya to take first place and draw first blood in Mortal Kombat’s first Premier event in their ProKompetition since the game released in April. For Tekken 7, ROX Dragon’s Knee defeated Red Bull’s Anakin’s JACK-7 in Grand Finals after a reset in the final, final game. Knee played Paul in Grand Finals and “won with time” by defending until the clock ran out. Tekken World Tour 2018 World Champion Rangchu came in third, and stuck to playing his Panda. In Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Reciprocity’s Punk, playing Karin, won the event against Mouz’s Problem X, the current EVO champion. Problem X plays M. Bison, or “Dictator” but after losing to Punk’s Karin earlier in the bracket, he switched to Abigail for Grand Finals. Problem X earned a reset but ultimately it wasn’t enough. Victor “Punk” Woodley is on an absolute tear so far this Capcom Pro Tour and adds today’s victory to his growing pile of first place wins. He also won this season’s Final Round and The MIXUP, both of which are CPT Premier events. Here are the final results of the Top 8 for Street Fighter V:

In Dragon Ball FighterZ, Cyclops Osaka’s Go1 (pronounced Goichi) and his Bardock, Kid Goku, Goku team defeated NRG’s HookGangGod and his Bardock, Piccolo, Vegeta team. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, SB|Maister played Mr. Game & Watch, a character that is considered “low tier” and not a great pick for competition, against dB|Yeti’s Mega Man.
In Under Night In-Birth EXE: Late[st], or UNIST, Clearlamp_o’s Byakuya won over Dramatik|Redblade’s Wagner. UNIST is replacing Super Smash Bros. Melee as main event game at this year’s EVO in August. In Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, LostSoul’s Elphelt defeated Daymendou’s Slayer in Grand Finals. In Soul Calibur VI, Linkorz (Geralt, Siegfried) beat out AXL|RichSticks (Maxi) for first place.
