Head of EA Mobile Development says “Zynga Blew it”

Frank Gibeau, former President of EA Games and recently appointed head of EA’s mobile development, spoke candidly in an interview with The New York Times about the state of the mobile gaming landscape.

When Mark Pincus, co-founder of Zynga, was brought up, Mr. Gibeau had this to say:

But Zynga blew it. They’re not a mobile business. We’re six or seven times their size in mobile. Zynga fell into a hole because they were completely focused on one platform, which is Facebook.

Back in early 2012, Zynga was owning the mobile landscape. With a stock price over $14 and a thriving online community of gamers, they were the king. Soon after, the company began a downward spiral that is only now beginning to turn around.

Independent developers are now a threat to the likes of Zynga and EA; a threat, according to Mr. Gibeau, that EA noticed much sooner than Zynga.
