Back in June 2025, Hasbro announced that the studio Giant Skull, led by Stig Asmussen, a veteran of the industry for his work on both the Jedi Survivor games and the God of War series. The game was to be a single-player action-adventure set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Hasbro has now officially confirmed that the game has been canceled, and the game was reportedly in early development.
Giant Skull is an independent studio founded in early 2024 by Stig Asmussen, who is well known in the industry for his work as art director on God of War 2 and God of War: Chains of Olympus, and later served as the creative director for God of War 3. And then, most recently, he worked at Respawn, serving as the game director for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. With a newly formed studio led by a renowned industry veteran, the studio was the perfect fit to head up this new game, a narrative-driven single-player action-adventure set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, built on the Unreal 5 Engine. At the beginning of this year, Wizards of the Coast and Giant Skull terminated their publishing deal, and, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schrier, they decided not to “pursue an early concept.” Stig Asmussen was later asked about the game’s cancellation: “Things are good at Giant Skull,” so it looks like all is well between the two companies.
It sucks that this new game got canceled, as it was set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, which has seen significant growth in recent years due to pop culture and the big success of Baldur’s Gate, which used the 5e format. A silver lining to this is that Giant Skull is doing well even after the game’s cancellation. Many studios suffer from this, but all is good, and their relationship is fine as well. It is unknown what is next for Giant Skull, but rest assured, they are most likely cooking something up and will let the world know once they’re ready.
