Harebrained Schemes, the developer behind popular titles like BattleTech, Shadowrun, and The Lamplighters League, has unveiled its first new project since splitting from Paradox Interactive last year: “Graft.“ The game is described as a “post-cyberpunk survival horror RPG” and will be available on PC.
Graft‘s narrative is set within the Arc, a vast, decaying space station the size of a continent. This dark and eerie environment, filled with forgotten technologies and unsettling mysteries, is the backdrop for the player’s journey. As players explore the Arc, they navigate treacherous terrains, including “massive chasms, labyrinthine techno-catacombs, and self-replicating corridors.” Along the way, they will confront various enemies in combat, ranging from “ancient experiments and monstrous abominations to relentless agents of a mad AI.”
A central mechanic in Graft is the process of “Grafting,” which requires players to scavenge body parts from defeated foes and attach them to their bodies. This allows them to alter their physical form, gaining new abilities and powers. However, Grafting isn’t just about physical transformation; it also involves a psychological element, as players inherit the memories of the body parts’ previous owners. Harebrained Schemes describes this as a “haunting interplay of survival, transformation, and self-discovery.”
The game also emphasizes the importance of alliances and trust. Players must form relationships with other characters, understanding that anyone they encounter could be an ally or a threat. The choices players make throughout the game will influence the direction of their journey and the fate of those they meet. The studio teases players’ moral dilemma: “Will you escape the Arc with your humanity intact, or become something else entirely?”
As of now, no release date has been announced for Graft. Harebrained Schemes plans to launch the game on the Epic Games Store and Steam. This marks the studio’s first release since last year’s The Lamplighters League, a turn-based strategy game that, despite its entertainment value, was declared a $22 million loss by publisher Paradox Interactive.
Following that financial setback, Paradox announced its decision to part ways with Harebrained Schemes, retaining the rights to The Lamplighters League, BattleTech, Necropolis, and the Shadowrun Trilogy, franchises developed by Harebrained Schemes before the split.
