Well-known Sony-owned game studio Insomiac Games has been recently targeted by Rhysida, a notorious ransomware group. Initially spotted by Cyber Daily, Rhysida has threatened Insomiac with the release of it’s stolen data from statement on their website. The stolen data includes screenshots of the upcoming Wolverine game among other personal Insomiac employe documents.
Rhysida also announced that it would be holding an auction on the data starting at 50 bitcoins or around $2 million USD.
“With just 7 days on the clock, seize the opportunity to bid on exclusive, unique, and impressive data,” said Rhysida. “Open your wallets and be ready to buy exclusive data. We sell only to one hand, no reselling, you will be the only owner!”
Additionally, Rhysida stated that they would hold an auction for the data starting at 50 Bitcoins or $2 million USD.
Following the announcement of the hack Tuesday morning, Sony responded with a statement, acknowledging the urgent matter.
“We are aware of reports that Insomniac Games has been the victim of a cyber security attack,” said Sony. “We are currently investigating this situation. We have no reason to believe that any other SIE or Sony divisions have been impacted.”
The gang’s proof-of-hack data is said to include an annotated screenshot from Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game, plus artwork that could reveal other Marvel characters set to feature in the PS5 title.
There has been an increasing amount of cyber attacks on big companies in recent years. Most notably was the 2022 hack on Rockstar Games by two UK teenagers. The hackers managed to leak significant amount of development footage on the upcoming game Grand Theft Auto 6.
In a more recent case, Ukraine-based GSC Game World was hacked in March by a pro-Russian hacker group, in an effort to make its upcoming game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl more “Russia-friendly.”
