From multiplayer game publisher Perfect World Entertainment, and the creators of the Darksiders franchise, come a new third-person survival action-shooter, Remnant: From The Ashes. The announcement trailer highlights the general environment and art style of the game while a narration accompanies the outline of the story and world.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world where monsters called The Root threaten to terrorize Earth via other dimensions, players are grouped as a team of four to venture into these alternative dimensions. Naturally, this means the game operates as a 4-player co-op shooter, much like the Left 4 Dead games. According to IGN, the core mechanics of the game involve crafting weapons and equipment as well as enlisting new members to run the home base. What is unique about the title is the so-called “dynamically-generated levels”, which seems to imply the dimensions that the players explore will differ each time. Gunfire Games has stated that there will be a character progression system, so players can customize their characters from the many hero archetypes available.
Judging from the trailer, despite the ruined and war-torn look of the world, there is still a substantial amount of color and brightness to the aesthetic. The level design also seems to have a good mix between open spaces for combat and claustrophobic, dark corridors. The creative designs of the monsters are where the game shines; there appears to be a wide variety of monsters to fight, and the massive boss battles are a spectacle to behold. To highlight this, Perfect World’s new Arc platform has a website that is providing more details regarding the unique enemies of the game in a series of blog posts collectively titled Creature Feature.
The game will be playable as a demo at PAX West and Gamescom later this year. While there is no set release date aside, the game will come out some time in 2019 for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
