Guerrilla Games To Shut Down Killzone and RIGS Online Servers This August

Guerrilla Games has announced that they will be shutting down the online servers for Killzone Mercenary, Killzone Shadow Fall (including Intercept Mode) and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League. The shutdown will take place next month on August 12, and will essentially end all online features for each of these entries. This includes any and all multiplayer functions that are associated with these titles respectively, and only the offline portion, or the single player mode, will be available to play after the aforementioned date

Since it has been a while since the franchise has been mentioned in any major light, for those who don’t know, Killzone Shadow Fall and Killzone Mercenary were the most recent mainline entries for the Killzone series. The titles, which both launched in 2013 for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita respectively, are in effect the final entries of the Killzone series, as Guerrilla Games has made little to no mention of ever returning to the series in any for or fashion. RIGS: Mechanized Combat League is a PS VR only title that was released in 2016.

Considering that massive popularity with Guerrilla Games’ other franchise, the Horizon series, it’s not that much of a surprise to see the studio begin to sunset the older Killzone servers in order to make room for newer ones. Still, it’s a sad day for those who are still playing those title’s online modes, as they now have a deadline to keep enjoying them. As we already mentioned, the rise of the Horizon series has put Killzone on the bench so to speak. Hopefully Guerrilla will bring it back one day, but for the foreseeable future that doesn’t seem to be the case.
