At long last WB Games Montreal has unveiled their anticipated gameplay demo for Gotham Knights that features Nightwing and Red Hood. Coming in at staggering 13 minutes, the video showcases how both characters play in combat, traversing the world map, and how they each use their respective gadgets. However, another interesting tidbit of information came out alongside the video. According to a press release obtained by VG24/7, Gotham Knights will launch on October 25 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This sounds normal except there’s one major change, the game is no longer releasing on the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One. In short, Warner Bros. has officially canceled the last-gen versions of the game, and will only release for the current set of systems.
As you can see in the tweet above, the small section in the press release states the main reason for the cancelations was due to their desire “to provide players with the best possible gameplay experience.” As of this writing, Warner Bros. has not further elaborated on this rather vague reveal, and it does not appear that they plan on going into more details anytime soon. The reason this is a bigger deal is because when it was initially revealed during the DC Fandome, it was billed as a cross-gen title, meaning that it would launch for the aforementioned systems, new and old. With the launch date of October 25 slowly approaching, this fairly late cancelation is rather unfortunate, as not everyone has made the jump to the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series X|S.
As for the actual gameplay video, Nightwing and Red Hood’s combat abilities are put on full display. Nightwing focuses on melee attacks while Red Hood uses more ranged or firearm tactics, as well as a really powerful leap. The two heroes pick up clues that point them to the Court of Owls which is one of Gotham’s oldest elite families. The game’s story is set after the apparent death of Batman, who leaves the city of Gotham in the hands of his wards, which also include Batgirl and Robin. This will be the second Batman title to be developed by WB Games Montreal who also worked on 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins which served as a prequel to the entire Batman Arkham trilogy. Gotham Knights was originally slated for a release in 2021 before Warner Bros. delayed it until the aforementioned new date was released.
Gotham Knights will officially launch this year on October 25 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
