God of War: Laufey’s SDCC Showcase Reaffirms Kratos as the Franchise’s Future

Sony and Santa Monica Studio outlined the future of the God of War franchise during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The statements were centered around the recently announced God of War Laufey, given its freshness in the minds of fans and, potentially, following the mixed reaction to its reveal during last month’s State of Play. The panel included two major announcements: a release window for Laufey and confirmation that another God of War project is already in development. Taken as a whole, the panel served as a statement from Santa Monica Studio that while Faye takes center stage in Laufey, Kratos remains the heart of the God of War franchise.

God of War Laufey appears poised to expand God of War‘s Norse saga, as the game’s protagonist was a character that was only known through flashbacks and dialogue before this. This expansion of Faye’s character by making her the game’s protagonist is meant to define her as more than just the catalyst for Kratos and Atreus’s journey during the Norse saga. This creative direction allows Laufey to function as many things: a prequel, a character study, and a continuation of the Norse saga. According to the panel, the Faye-led game will have a 2027 release window, with a planned release date of February 16, 2027, and be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. However, this focus on Faye is not meant to be an indication that Kratos will lose his place as the center of the God of War universe. Instead, Laufey appears intended to broaden the God of War universe while keeping Kratos at its center.

This reassertion of Kratos’s importance at the center of the God of War universe coincides with the panel’s other major announcement: that a new God of War project is currently in development. While the information given about it was limited, we do know that Kratos will return as the new game’s protagonist and the story will directly connected to the events of Laufey. The early confirmation of another project could indicate that Santa Monica Studio and Sony are confident in both Laufey and the broader direction of the franchise.

Sony is expected to share additional details about both games closer to their respective releases.
