God Of War Laufey’s Release Window May Have Been Revealed Following Confirmation Of Disc Version

Earlier this month, PlayStation shocked the video game world when they announced that they will no longer be producing discs starting in January 2028. That means that all new PS5 games going forward from that date will only be available on the PlayStation Store or at retailers in digital-only formats. One of PlayStation’s most highly anticipated games at the moment is God of War Laufey, which was announced to be coming soon. Today, developer Sony Santa Monica may have teased that we’ll be getting the next chapter in the God of War series sooner than we thought when they confirmed that the game will have a disc version.

Based on the new information, many are assuming that God of War Laufey will launch sometime in 2027. This is due to the transition out of producing discs having no impact on games that are already released or will be releasing, prior to January 2028.

The announcement of PlayStation stopping disc production was met with much criticism. A petition asking  Sony to reconsider the move has received more than 285,000 signatures. There are also many canceling their PlayStation Plus subscriptions to protest the “death of discs”. However, analysts say this won’t make a difference. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Japanese game industry consultancy firm Kantan Games told IGN:

“I sympathize with physical media fans, but Sony will not reverse this decision,” Toto told IGN. “They of course knew what the online reaction would look like, and they now wait for this storm to pass.

“Sony has over 120 million active PlayStation users,” he continued. “Around 50 million people subscribe to PlayStation Plus. As a thought experiment, let’s say 500,000 cancel in protest, that would be just 1% of that business gone — of course not enough to Sony to start rethinking. Digital is just too lucrative.”

God of War Laufey has a panel this year next week at San Diego Comic Con featuring  Head of Creative, Cory Barlog, Game Director Ariel Lawrence, and members of the cast including Deborah Ann Woll who plays Faye, Christopher Judge who plays Kratos, and new to the franchise, Jack Quaid who plays Phranque, and Perlina Lau who plays Rue. The panel is set to take place on Friday, July 24, at 5:30 PT.
