Glen Schofield Retires From Game Development

After decades of time spent in the industry, veteran developer Glen Schofield has announced on LinkedIn that he is retiring. Schofield is famous for helping develop iconic titles such as Legacy of Kain, Gex, and most notably Dead Space. Other works he’s associated with include a number of Lord of the Rings games, 007: From Russia with Love, and the Dead Space-spiritual successor, The Callisto Protocol. Schofield also went on to co-found Sledgehammer Games, who have assisted with and developed numerous Call of Duty games since their founding in 2009, and had previously been vice-president and general manager at Visceral Games.

In his post on LinkedIn, he goes on to thank his friends, family, fellow developers, and the many fans who were passionate towards his works helping him along the way of his 35-year career. He remarks that, “I had a front row seat to one of the greatest creative explosions in history, I think – and to the people who supported us in video games… I mean we can’t do it without you. And again, you supported my games and my team’s games”.

Arguably one of Schofield’s most iconic works, Dead Space has left a massive impact on the gaming world and its legacy is still felt today. Dead Space was influenced by Resident Evil 4 as well as the movies such as Event Horizon (whose actor/Jurassic Park star Sam Neill unfortunately passed away two days ago) and the early 1970s Soviet film Solaris. It would go on to have two sequels and a well-received 2023 remake (of which Schofield gave praise and approval towards), however Schofield would not be attached to either of these projects. He did however lead development of The Callisto Protocol which launched in 2022 and starred Josh Duhamel (who had previously worked with Schofield in Call of Duty: WWII), Karen Fukuhara, and Sam Witwer, and was heavily inspired by the original Dead Space

Whatever Schofield plans to do now following his departure from gaming, he will be remembered for his impact on the industry and the many notable titles that exist thanks to him. Here’s to 35 years, Glenn.
