Ghostrunner was one of 2020’s major sleeper hits. The indie title gained some serious momentum not too long after launching in October 2020, reaching more than 500,000 units sold by the end of the year. The title’s publisher, 505 Games, was impressed enough by this feat that they ended up reaching an agreement developer One More Level and purchased the rights to the franchise. Now, 505 Games has announced that Ghostrunner has exceeded more than 600,000 units sold, and officially revealed that a full-fledged sequel is on the way.
The sequel, dubbed Ghostrunner 2, is currently in production with the very same developer, One More Level, and that it will be released for numerous platforms including the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/Series S. 505 Games also revealed that they will be doubling the investment for the sequel with an initial budget of €5 million. The publisher mentioned that the first Ghostrunner will make its way to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/Series S by the end of 2021 instead of just being backward compatible.
As we already mentioned, Ghostrunner came out in the Fall of 2020 and was generally well-received. The short buy very flashy gameplay mixed with the parkour first-person perspective won over a lot of gamers who praised its design despite the fairly high difficulty curve. Considering that it launched in the middle of one of the most anticipated gaming holiday seasons and did this well is a testament to its staying power. Now that a sequel is on the way, we expect those sales numbers to go up exponentially throughout 2021.
Ghostrunner is available now for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game will release for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/Series S by the end of 2021.
