Ghost of Yotei is having a sucessful and profitable launch, as The Game Business reports it is the biggest first-party launch for PlayStation since Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 which became the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game with 12 million sold in 12 weeks. Yotei’s sales are reportedly in-line with its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, which has sold over 13 million as of September 2024.
In Europe, Ghost of Yotei debuts in 2nd in the GSD European charts. It sits just behind EA Sports FC 26 which has held the top spot on the charts for the third week. Behind both are Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, Digimon Story: Time Stranger, Doom Eternal, Far Cry Primal, Hogwarts Legacy, Red Dead Redemption 2, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles.
Matt Piscatella, Senior Director at Circana, reports that Ghost of Yotei is ranked 12th in the Top 15 Titles by Total Weekly Active Users for the week ending October 4, with 4.4% of active PlayStation players giving it a go. Coincidentally, Ghost of Tsushima ranked 12th in its launch week, with the same 4.4% of active PlayStation Players engaging with the game back in 2020.
Despite the game’s success, it won’t guarantee another title in the franchise. Sucker Punch Co-Founder and Studio Head Brian Fleming teased the studio’s plans in an interview with VGC.
Talking about whether or not Sucker Punch would work on multiple projects, Fleming said “the truth is, whatever we do next, whether it’s continuing Ghost or going back to Sly, the decision is really more limited by, again, our cherishing of focus and time to iterate, which means that we really can do one thing at a time.”
“If we were good at juggling four projects, yeah, we’d have a remaster, and let’s go do one of those, and one of those, and do some fan request, that would be really popular… But we only get to do one thing.
“So it kind of has to be your best idea, right? And that’s really clarifying. It’s not like there aren’t 15 good ideas. But you only get to do one. And by the way, you only get to do one about every five years. So that choice is really important. I mean, that is choosing your college and your major every five years.”
He continued: “And you could go to Cambridge, but you could also go to UCLA. And you could also decide you’re going to go to the Peace Corps, but you can only do one of those in the next five years. Wow, that’s a really big decision. You’d better think carefully about it.”
Sucker Punch’s 30th anniversary is coming in 2027 with many fans hoping to see a return to one of its classic franchises like Sly Cooper or InFamous. Following the interview, there have been many on social media getting excited at the possibility of seeing a return of either franchise. Fleming also talked about how the diversity of expectations is challenging both externally and internally.
At 30 years, we now have employees who are kids of former employees. We have employees who weren’t born when the studio was founded,” he said.
“And you also have had enough changes from Sly, to InFamous, to Ghost that part of those changes, when they happen, is that it means not just you’re walking away from Tsushima, and not just that you’re walking away from the actors in Tsushima, but you’re walking away from employees who’ve been a part of the studio for the last decade, because they don’t want to do a game set in a historical setting.”
