After what feels like an eternity, Sucker Punch has finally announced an official release date for their upcoming samurai epic Ghost of Tsushima. The game will launch for the PlayStation 4 this year on June 26, 2020. In addition, the company has also released a brand new Story Trailer which focuses on the games protagonist, Jin Sakai, and his duty to protect everyone on the island of Tsushima.
According to the post on the PlayStation blog, the island of Tsushima is being invaded by the ruthless Mongols, with Jin as its main protector. He’ll be forced to “set aside his samurai traditions and become a new kind of warrior” as he sets off on an adventure to ensure peace and freedom for the people of Tsushima. The trailer also points out Jin’s Uncle, Shimura the Jito (Lord) of Tsushima, as well as Khotun Khan who is the leader of the Mongols.
As if the release date and Story Trailer weren’t enough, Sucker Punch also announced two Special Physical Editions and one Digital Deluxe Edition of the game. The Digital Deluxe version of the game has a digital copy of the game, the Hero of Tsushima Skin Set, the Charm of Hachiman’s favor, and a PlayStation 4 Dynamic theme. The first of the two Physical iterations, The Special Edition, comes with a slick steelbook case for the game, as well as a voucher for the aforementioned Skin Set.
The Collector’s Edition, which looks like the coolest one, comes with an actual replica of the samurai mask that Jin wears in the game. Unfortunately, you can’t wear it, but it does looks absolutely awesome. You’ll also receive the sashimono (war banner) which is also a replica from the game, and a cloth map of the island of Tsushima. On top of that, the Collector’s Edition comes with all of the aforementioned items from the previous editions.
For everyone at Sucker Punch, this the culmination of all of their hard work, as well as the near-end of a long journey that started years ago. Ghost of Tsushima was originally announced as a brand new project in the Fall of 2017. It wouldn’t be until 2019 when we received any more concrete details on the game when Sucker Punch offered teaser for some gameplay at The Game Awards, which was enough to reinvigorate fan interest in the IP.
This will be the first title for Sucker Punch since 2014’s Infamous: Second Son and its expansion Infamous: First Light, just a little under six years ago. The company is due for another huge title, and we’ll see the fruits of their labor very soon. Ghost of Tsushima will officially launch on June 26, 2020, for the PlayStation 4.
