The German Trade Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU) and convention organizer Koelnmesse announced earlier today in joint statement that German chancellor Angela Markel will officially open up Gamescom 2017. The companies said that chancellor will “participate in the opening tour,” in a news release.
BIU couldn’t provide any other information on the matter at this point but did confirm that Markel will be attendance on the first day of the show. Gamescom 2017 will run from August 22-26, although attendance on the first day is restricted only to media personnel. The show will officially open up for the public on August 23. Any particular reasons for her involvement in the convention is currently unknown.
Respective administrators for both Koelnmesse and BIU both expressed how they feel that Markel’s involvement in the convention does nothing but good for the industry. Felix Falk, managing director of BIU stated that “The visit of Dr. Merkel underlines the importance of the games industry for the cultural, digital and business location of Germany.”
Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse added “With her visit she honors the development of Gamescom into one of the most successful and largest events in the German trade fair system.” Both of the companies seem to be very appreciative for this opportunity and feel like it will emphasize the industry’s importance to the country. This will be the very first appearance from an active German political leader at Gamescom ever. Germany has been hosting the yearly event since 2009, and last year the event brought in over 345,000 attendees.
