As the 2025 Game Awards inch ever closer, the many factions of game communities grow increasingly eager to see the long-awaited sequel to their favorite series. Elder Scrolls 6, the next Fromsoftware title, you name it; the hype is real for new announcements. And as it just so happens, recently, Game Awards host Geoff Keighley made a mysterious post on X showing an image of a statue at a set of coordinates in the Mojave desert:

The statue has not been confirmed to be from any particular studio or franchise, but this hasn’t prevented gamers from putting out their wildest speculations. It can be seen in the image posted by Keighley as well as those taken by other sources that there are various animals, figures, viscera, and abstract, paranormal-looking features writhing around in the statue’s form, and people have made some interesting connections based on these observations. A popular idea that has been floating around is that the statue is for new content related to Diablo 4. The devilish imagery here would certainly suggest that, and to boot executive editor at Windows Central Jez Corden made post alluding to the statue being for the game, but just today he reneged on that due to quote from games journalist Jason Schreier who claims otherwise.

Schreier specifies that he’s not covering the matter, but he does say that whatever it is teasing will be “a good one,” which suggests that it could indeed be a title from a heavy hitter. Other guesses to the statue’s meaning on X and Reddit include Tomb Raider, God of War, and of course–although not seriously–Half Life 3. The former two would make some sense though. As some fans have pointed out, Lara Croft has had run-ins with some pretty spooky creatures, and fighting demons from any dimension is just a Tuesday afternoon for Kratos and his son. It all remains to be seen though. One can only hope that this year’s Game Awards announcements live up to fans’ expectations; the nominees for GOTY certainly set a high bar and a good mood.

Julian Ebert: Although I graduated with a major in film, video games hold a special place in my heart. I love games with atmosphere, immersion, and tense gameplay loops, so my favorite games gravitate toward horror and survival shooter greats like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and the Resident Evil series. When I’m not enjoying one of those, I like to read science fiction and check movies off of my “to watch” list.
