Mythology has been inspiring art for as long as people have been able to make it. With video games being the latest in popular art forms, it is only natural that recent years has seen a surge of mythological games, interpreting the ancient stories in varied and exciting ways. The latest of these to be announced is Genigods: Nezha, a game that allows players to experience an ancient Chinese genesis myth as an action RPG.
The game was announced recently with a five-minute trailer to show off the fast-paced gameplay players can look forward to. For the majority of the trailer the main character, Nezha, battles against a boss named King Tian’s Unbroken Frame. Both her attacks and the boss’s come out quick, creating a dance of dodging and striking. The fight features multiple phases, with some clashes playing out with cinematic close-ups. The boss is also seen charging up an attack before being interrupted by a combo, indicating a dynamic enemy behavior not seen in many boss battles. Toward the end of the fight, Nezha is able to trap the boss in a devastating aerial combo that drains about half of his health bar, prompting yet another escalation that cuts out before it is finished.
Genigods: Nezha‘s Steam store page offers additional details about the game’s story. The player character is the Spirit Pearl, created by a goddess to resolve the chaos caused by the Genesis God “succumbing to slumber”. Players will be expected to mend the shattered sky to keep the ten suns from scorching the land while also exploring their own origin and sealing rifts in spacetime. During fights, players will be able to shift between grounded and air combat while also using mythic abilities and fused relics.
The reveal has sparked much discussion, with many details still being unknown. For now, gamers that are interested have a trailer to watch and mythology to study.
