Gearbox Software, the famed developers behind the beloved Borderlands series, has not made a mainline game in the multiplayer shooter franchise since 2012’s Borderlands 2. It has dabbled in quite a few outside projects since then, including Duke Nukem’s reboot and an Aliens: Colonial Marine game, along with some experimental titles such as the failed hero shooter Battleborn and the psychological, action-adventure game We Happy Few. Despite all this, fans still clamored for a return to form for Gearbox, asking the question that may finally get answered in the coming weeks: where is Borderlands 3?
The highly anticipated third entry in the Mad Max-esque looter shooter was rumored to make an appearance at the past Game Awards, but that obviously did not come to pass. However, in a tweet announcement released today by the Gearbox account, it would seem that fans may not have to wait long to finally get a glimpse at Borderland 3’s official reveal. The tweet contains an image of a desecrated freeway sign in the middle of a desert. Scribbled on the sign, in traditional Borderlands vandalizing font, is the date March 28 and the location of Boston, Massachusetts.
While seemingly cryptic, the clues are relatively straightforward. March 28 marks the beginning of this year’s PAX East, located in Boston, MA. Though the tweet does not explicitly sport the Borderlands name, the art style of the illustration speaks volume, from the cell-shaded post-apocalyptic background to the classic typesetting of the bloody letters.
Hopefully, all the hype and anticipation surrounding this tease won’t result in anything less than a full-fledged reveal of the sequel, one that has been long overdue. Gearbox first announced work on the project back during PAX East 2016, so it only stands to reason, three years later, that the game would finally be shown off in all the chaotic glory for which the series is known.
