Gearbox Releases Borderlands Teaser Trailer ‘Mask of Mayhem’

Today was a glorious day for fans of the Borderlands series, as a new teaser trailer dropped. Appropriately titled ‘Mask of Mayhem,’ the trailer follows the inner-carvings of an intricate mask, seemingly of the psycho-variety. The trailer is extremely well-made and hides within it a ton of secrets, most of which fans are still dissecting. You can check out the trailer below.

The teaser trailer leads into Gearbox’s PAX East livestream, which you can check out on the Borderlands website at 11 am PDT tomorrow, March 28. Gearbox is set to officially reveal new Borderlands game, which most fans are speculating to be Borderlands 3. While there is still no confirmation on the title, there is a lot to unpack from the trailer that suggests as much.

PC Gamer did a fantastic job breaking down the trailer to the minute details, so fans of the series will appreciate the information they gathered on the almost-living mask. The main takeaways, however, are the suspected antagonists, the likely playable vault hunters, and some extra goodies hidden inside the trailer.

According to a leak earlier this year, there are supposedly two main antagonists: the Calypso twins. While it’s all speculation at this point, being surrounded by an army of devoted psychos just doesn’t scream “good guys.”

While there are more than a few familiar faces in the trailer (Claptrap, Lilith, and Tiny Tina to name a few), a group of unknown four stands out shortly after the all-but-proclaimed baddies. According to the same leak, the supposed names and classes (from top to bottom, left to right) are Zane the Assassin, Flak the Hunter, Amara the Siren, and Moze the Soldier.

The folks over at Gearbox were not content with just dropping a crazy, hype-fueling trailer either. Multiple codes were left in the trailer for the eagle-eyed viewer. On the top left of the screen, starting at 0:15, Morse code spells “Count the Sirens,” likely in reference to the rule of six lore in the series. Starting around 0:35 in the bottom left corner, Braille reads “Follow and Obey.” Ominous.

Finally, Gearbox has gifted a SHIFT Code (C35TB – WS6ST – TXBRK – TTTJT – JJH6H) staggered throughout the trailer. Claiming it in Borderlands 2 will land you a skin for Salvador and five shiny golden keys. Props to the good folks on the r/Borderlands board on Reddit for decoding everything, and all while collectively losing their minds!

Be sure to check out the PAX East livestream tomorrow at 11am PDT for the unveiling of the next jaunt in Pandora.
