The pockets of Capcom’s properties run deep, and we’ve received a new trailer for one of their more obscure titles at Gamescom in the form of Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s gameplay reveal trailer.

For those who played the older Onimusha games, the first thing that probably immediately jumps out at you are the remixed versions of the Reynaldo enemy from prior Onimusha titles; famous for getting bisected and regrowing an entire separate body from the halves. Next to them we can see a cutscene of a lanky, high pitched genma who is likely a callback to the demon scientist Guildenstern. It seems like Onimusha: Way of the Sword will pay a good amount of homage to the original titles (no Jean Reno, sadly).

One thing that may put some classic players off of Way of the Sword are the constant showcasing of a seemingly more streamlined parry system. A new addition to the series and something that’s been a contentious topic among Onimusha fans since Way of the Sword released. However, if rewatch the trailer you can see Musashi pull of an Issen Counter and immediately kill an enemy with it, so the old aggressively defensive playstyle will likely be viable in this game as well.

With some sick new monster designs and some cool callbacks to the original series rendered through Capcom’s RE Engine, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is shaping up to be a great jumping off point for the hopeful revival of one of Capcom’s more beloved underground IPs. Fans of older titles seeing these newer games are always skeptics, rightly so, but hopefully more looks at gameplay and even potentially a demo can waylay some of those doubts. Look forward to the full release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword in 2026 for Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam.

I hope my history in this hobby and my enthusiasm for writing helps me convey news to you accurately and succinctly.
