The first look at Hideo Kojima’s new game, OD, has been shown off at The Game Awards 2023. The trailer doesn’t show much, only the faces of the main actors repeating a cryptic phrase into the camera.
The game stars It and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ Sophia Lillis, Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier. It was also revealed to be made in collaboration with Academy Award-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele, director of Get Out, Up, and Nope. who described the game as “completely immersive” and “utterly terrifying.” A press release from Kojima Productions says that he is just one of many talented storytellers on board.
Last year, leaks suggested that Kojima’s next game would be called Overdose, and would star Margaret Qualley. It would appear that this is the final version of that, with a new star.
Kojima stated that he is trying to make something that no one has seen before, and described it as “a game, but also a movie.” Peele seems to believe he succeeded. “What he’s cooking up here is completely immersive, utterly terrifying, and I am absolutely honored to be collaborating with the GOAT,” he said.
The press release elaborates on this, saying “We are working with Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology to take on the challenge of creating a very unique, immersive, and totally new style of game – or rather, a new form of media.”
“A HIDEO KOJIMA GAME, OD explores the concept of testing your fear threshold, and what it means to OD on fear – while blurring the boundaries of gaming and film,” it continues.
Kojima Productions is also rumored to be working on a Death Stranding sequel. With no updates on that, people will have an entirely original project to focus on in the meantime.
