Out of all the Fallout games made in the Bethesda era (Fallout 3 onward,) Fallout: New Vegas, made by Obsidian, is considered one of the better ones. Many people would love for Obsidian to get another shot with the Fallout series. However, a recent tweet from the studio suggests that we won’t be seeing them take on the world of Fallout any time soon.
In the past, various folks at Obsidian have mentioned wanting to work with the Fallout franchise again. In 2016, designer Eric Fenstermaker said in tweet “I’m always up for working on a Fallout. I think most of us generally are. Really fun property to work with.” Next year, in an interview with VG247, CEO Feargus Urqhart told them that “I’d love to do another Fallout.”
However, despite their interest in making another entry in the Fallout franchise, that opportunity may not arrive for them. With Fallout 76 just around the corner, someone on Twitter asked Obsidian about the possibility of them making another properly single-player Fallout. Obsidian replied with a picture:
As sad as it is that Obsidian probably won’t be making another Fallout game, it’s a fact that isn’t entirely surprising. Back in July, Todd Howard, the director and executive producer of Bethesda, said that Bethesda’s growth in recent years meant that they could keep their development in-house (in Obsidian’s defense, Todd Howard said that Obsidian did “a fabulous job” with Fallout: New Vegas.) In addition, Microsoft is reportedly close to acquiring Obsidian, with sources saying the deal is “90 percent” complete. It would be very unlikely for Bethesda to outsource one of their biggest IPs to a Microsoft-owned studio.
Fallout 76 releases to the public November 14. For those who haven’t played Fallout: New Vegas and want to see what it’s about, Humble Bundle is currently selling the original game for half price among other products in its ‘Bethesda Bombs Drop Sale‘ until October 23.
