FromSoftware head Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed that Elden Ring’s upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will be the game’s only expansion, as they wanted to put all of their focus into one experience.
Miyazaki spoke in an interview with the Chinese outlet Zhihu, machine translated by IGN, where he discussed the plans for future content.
“[Shadow of the Erdtree] is the first and last DLC, and we have no plans to add more content to Elden Ring,” Miyazaki said.
He explained that splitting the expansion into multiple smaller waves would hurt the sense of exploration and make the game feel less grand.
“Elden Ring emphasizes exploration and adventure in a big world. In order to provide such an experience, a vast and huge setting is inevitably needed,” he said. “Therefore, instead of splitting it into several parts, it was better to simply make one big [expansion]. If they were sold separately, the freedom of exploration and sense of adventure would be reduced.”
Miyazaki previously said they were leaving the door open for a sequel in an interview at IGN Fan Fest 2024, though no decision had been made.
“We don’t want to say this is the end of the Elden Ring saga for now,” he said. “I think we said a similar thing at the end of Dark Souls 3. We didn’t want to flatten those possibilities or put a pin in them just at that time. And it’s a similar story with Elden Ring. We don’t want to discourage the possibilities for that. There might be more ideas in the future.”
“We don’t have any current plans to make a second DLC or a sequel, but we definitely don’t want to snuff out that possibility. We think that there could well be something in the future,” he said.
The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is available for preorder now, and releases June 21.
