GalaxyTrail announced Sunday that Freedom Planet 2 will be released sometime in Spring 2022. The much-anticipated sequel to the company’s first game, Freedom Planet, has been a heavily anticipated game since it was first announced to be in development back in 2015. After the announcement, a demo of gameplay was showcased during The Completionist’s Indieland charity stream on Sunday.
Freedom Planet was originally released in 2014 as a sonic-like platformer and acquired a fanbase as the game traveled from PC, to Mac, to the Playstation 4 and even to the Nintendo Switch.
The sequel promises new gameplay, a guard/parry system, a new story, and a new playable character named Neera. One of the developers, Sabrina DiDuro, is ready to take the series in a new and original direction.
The original Freedom Planet was modeled as a tribute to Sega Genesis platform games. We’ve learned what works and what doesn’t, what’s fun and what’s frustrating, what we should expand on and what we can afford to lose. With all of this in mind, we feel that we are ready to bid farewell to nostalgia and create a sequel that will define Freedom Planet’s identity as a franchise.
Jirard Khalil, known as The Completionist, posted his review of the original game earlier this year. He also hosted his annual Indieland charity stream this week on Twitch. The event dedicates itself to promoting indie games while raising money for dementia research and treatment. During this year’s stream, The Completionist dedicated a time block towards playing Freedom Planet 2’s demo. The developers were also brought on for commentary during the stream.
If you want to prepare for Freedom Planet 2 by playing the first game, it is currently being sold on the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store and Steam for $14.99.
