The battle-royale shooter Fortnite has recently released their collaboration with Sony’s and Netflix’s wildly popular and successful animated movie K-Pop Demon Hunters. The collaboration includes a new bundle, featuring skins and items from the movie, in addition to a re-vamped battle mode. However, fans have expressed disappointment with the collaboration’s lack of music from the movie’s original soundtrack.
The decision for Fortnite to collaborate with K-Pop Demon Hunters comes as no surprise. The animated film currently stands as Netflix’s most watched movie of all time, garnering total of 325 million views since its release in late June of this year. Despite premiering on the streaming platform, the movie’s popularity has led to the release of limited time theatrical sing-alongs and potential plans for two sequels and live-action remake.
Many popular aspects from the original movie are implemented into the Fortnite collaboration through the K-Pop Demon Hunters Bundle. The bundle includes regular and LEGO mini-figure skins for HUNTR/X’s very own Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. The bundle also includes each character’s respective weapon and ramyeon, such as Rumi’s sword and Mira’s extra spicy ramyeon. The final addition to the bundle is the “Zoey’s Thumbs Up” emote, referencing one of the movie’s many popular scenes. The bundle currently sits at a discounted price of 3,500 V-bucks with a full price of 7,200 V-bucks.
In addition to the bundle, K-Pop Demon Hunters will also take the stage in Fortnite’s new Demon Rush mode, which is a revamped version of Fortnite’s Horde Rush mode. The description of the mode says that players can “team up and rack up multipliers by crushing swarms of Demons to earn a chart-topping high score.” In the gamemode, players will be able to equip various HUNTR/X-themed items and battle to earn the brand new Hunter rank.
Many fans have expressed excitement for all of these aspects of the collaboration, but one common complaint is the lack of Jam-Tracks or emotes related to the movie’s original soundtrack. One of the largest contributing factors to K-Pop Demon Hunter’s success is its music, with the song “Golden” hitting number 1 on the Billboard 100 and the movie’s fictional K-Pop boyband, the Saja Boys, outperforming the real-life K-Pop group BTS. Fortnite’s decision to ignore the soundtrack, despite its overwhelming popularity, has left many fans baffled.
Some believe that the soundtrack’s absence shows that the collaboration was rushed and released without the extra polish needed to make the collaboration truly great. Others speculate that there may have been an issue with acquiring the rights to the music, and that music related features will be implemented in the future.
There is no official confirmation that K-Pop Demon Hunter’s soundtrack will be added to the game in the future. While waiting for said confirmation, fans of the movie can still enjoy the K-Pop Demon Hunters-themed skins and game mode that Fortnite currently has to offer.
