Former EA, Ubisoft, & Activision Blizzard Devs Announce New Studio Yellow Brick Games

Today, former EA, Ubisoft, and Activision Blizzard devs have announced the formation of a new studio in Quebec City called Yellow Brick Games. The founding team consists of Frederic St-Laurent B., Jeff Skalski, Thomas Giroux, and Mike Laidlaw. “We believe very strongly in creating digital playgrounds. The more interactivity and freedom a game can give to a player, the more immersive and compelling it can be, so long as there are clear rules that guide those interactions,” said Yellow Brick Games on their official website. “We feel that a truly emergent game can engage players through their own creativity and will offer tools that let our players share those experiences.”

Thomas Giroux is the studio’s CEO, Jeff Skalski the COO and Executive Producer, Frederic St-Laurent B. will serve as Game Director, and Mike Laidlaw is Yellow Brick Games’ Chief Creative Officer. Laidlaw was the former creative director on Dragon Age with Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, and Dragon Age: Inquisition while he was at Bioware for 14 years, leaving the studio in 2017. Recently, he was a creative director at Ubisoft.

On the new studio, Thomas Giroux said “We want to emphasize a ‘back to basics approach’, centered on the pleasure of crafting new game experiences, in a flexible and more personable environment that an independent studio can provide.”

We have learned a lot from working on world-class, multi-year projects with thousands of colleagues and we want to take a different approach,” Jeff Skalski said. “Leveraging a smaller talented team where people come first, we will create amazing worlds and experiences for all others to enjoy. The market is moving fast, and we have no desire to play catchup and chase it when we can influence where it goes. These goals drove us to found Yellow Brick Games.”

Yellow Brick Games’ first project has yet to be revealed. For more updates, you can go to the official website and follow them on Twitter and Facebook.
