Form: The VR Puzzle Game That Dives Into The Mind

Form is a virtual reality game in which players are tasked with manipulating large and mysterious objects to solve puzzles and unlock secrets. Developed by Vancouver based Charm Games, the game aims to use spatial freedom and the scale of VR to create puzzles that require a larger scaled picture. Gaming puzzles usually take place in a relatively small area, however Form takes a more physical approach requiring that players look around and reach which gives the game a more physical approach.

The game follows a story of a Doctor Devin Eli, stranded on a remote lab complex. Eli has “superhuman powers of geometric visualization.” this ability allows him to recognize shapes that normal human beings cannot comprehend. After the protagonist discovers an ancient artifact he then goes off on a journey into the depths of his own mind.

The make up of the narrative gives the developers of Form freedom to create puzzles dealing with light, shapes, and sequences. There are a lot of mechanics involving grabbing items, turning them over, and checking places to see where they might fit, which is usually 3D logic that entertains children but still holds some entertainment value for adults as well. Many of the early puzzles involve fitting the right shape into the right box. The success of other VR puzzles like Obduction, Fantastic Contraption, and Floor Plan show that there is still a great interest in physical and logical manipulation games. Form will be released later this year on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, with a PlayStation VR version planned to follow.
