Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters, a new Digimon cross media related project by Bandai Namco has released its first trailer. Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters Cyber Arena has a planned release for Fall this year in Japan on the 3DS eShop. The full retail version of the game has still been given an official release date. The trailer can be viewed below.
There is a lot of investment in this project as the game will also have an anime released alongside the game. Essentially the idea behind this game is that these Digimon exist within smart phone applications, hence “appmon.” Players will be able to acquire different “appmon” through scanning QR codes specific to that Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters toy. In essence you buy the toys to build your party. The game will be an RPG designed around building a varied deck of “appmon” each with their own unique abilities. This is another collecting RPG that puts a lot of emphasis on the ability for players to build their party to their taste and play style.
The gameplay for Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters Cyber Arena is based around party attacks and abilities. The different abilities can be stacked within the party, combining damage, percentage based buffs or debuffs, and other abilities with every attack. Different “appmon” can also be fused together. When they are fused together the player acquires a new “appmon” with its own set of abilities and a different appearance. In the advertising for the game the player is encouraged to try as many of these combinations as possible in order to see the varied results they can achieve.
There is still no word on whether or not this game series will make its way to North America, due to the ever growing market for nostalgia it seems possible, but then again cross media games have not always done well in North America.
