

Publisher 3D Realms and developer Anshar Studios have released an announcement trailer for their reimagining of the 2004 first-person horde shooter Painkiller for PC. Gematsu reports this reimagining, under the same title, is set for launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on October 9 and that digital pre-orders are currently available.
The Painkiller reimagining is set in a gothic purgatory, where demons and colossal “Nephilim” reside. Unlike the original Painkiller players will no longer assume the role of Daniel Garner, but instead choose from four unique characters. These characters include, Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch who all share the goal of stopping the fallen angel Azazel from unleashing his demon armies onto Earth and earning their own salvation from Purgatory. From their release, 3D Realms and Anshar Studios shares “Condemned for your sins, the Voice of the Creator offers you a chance at redemption. Will you seize it or be lost to darkness?
Painkiller features up to three player cooperative play and online support. Players will be able to jump, dash and hook across multiple gothic biomes using classic Painkiller weapons and new. Players will battle enemy hordes of smaller demons and “titanic terrors” . Players will utilize tarot cards to enhance their abilities and can combine them with other player’s cards to use against foes. Each of the four unique characters range between energy, health, power, and damage.
Developer Anshar Studios aims to deliver a modern reimagining of the classic Painkillers while maintaining its action elements and gothic horror setting. With a host of new series features such as three-player co-op, a diverse crew of characters, and tarot card set expanded from 24 to 44 at launch; Fans of old may find themselves set with a some brand new features on offer and new fans may find this to be an enticing new package.
