Firewatch Developer Campo Santo Joins Forces With Valve

Big news for fans of Valve and Campo Santo: the two studios are now working together.

For those unfamiliar, Campo Santo was a studio launched by experienced designers from The Walking Dead video game and The Mark of the Ninja. Their first title, Firewatch, was the indie darling of 2016, an intimate narrative about a lookout tower in the Shoshone National Forest and the lone occupant, Henry.

In a blog post today, Campo Santo announced that they were joining up with Valve. They were quick to assure readers that all 12 of their employees are staying on through the switch and that they will continue work on their upcoming title, In The Valley of Gods.

“In Valve we found a group of folks who, to their core, feel the same way about the work that they do (this, you may be surprised to learn, doesn’t happen every day). In us, they found a group with unique experience and valuable, diverse perspectives. It quickly became an obvious match,” the developers wrote in their post.

It seems like the move was motivated by a desire to be able to focus more on the games, experience, and to have the resources of a larger company at their disposal to help them along the way. The post also includes a lovely story about how they stole a bottle of champagne from IGN in 2015 that was meant for Valve and drank it to celebrate Firewatch. It really seems like a match made in heaven.

This is a big move for Valve as well who seems to be kicking their production into high gear again, and not just for their own titles, but for other developers as well. As always, we look forward to whatever they might do next. Though after the success of Firewatch, their smartest move might be to keep letting Campo Santo do exactly what they’ve been doing.
