Final Fantasy XV: Comrades Expansion Gets a New Release Date

It’s been almost a year since the release of Final Fantasy XV, the long-awaited installment of the series that began life as Final Fantasy Versus XIII and took ten years to develop (sound familiar, Tetsuya Nomura fans?). And while it was the swan song for Fabula Nova Crystallis—the series-within-a-series that also includes Final Fantasy XIII and Type-0—the game would find one more post-release hitch in development before all was said and done.

Comrades, an expansion for Final Fantasy XV that introduces online co-op multiplayer, new quests, and a new side story, was announced this past summer and slated for an October 31 release at TGS 2017. However, within two weeks of the date, fans were hit with something familiar: another delay. Based on the need for “final adjustments & to create the best possible experience,” players were going to have to wait a little more.

Thankfully, the delay turned out to be much more agreeable than what players had to go through waiting for the full game. Today, the new release date for Comrades was announced: November 15.

The expansion takes place during Chapter 12 and 13 of the main game, revolving around pivotal actions taken by main protagonist Lucis. It brings some exciting new elements to the table, such as a customized player character and backstory, new abilities through “Royal Sigils,” and the promise that sidekicks Gladiolus, Prompto, and Ignis “will be made playable in future game updates.”

Comrades is available as a standalone purchase, or through the Final Fantasy XV Season Pass, which already contains a couple of item packs; two single-player story expansions, Episode Gladiolus and Episode Prompto; and the upcoming Episode Ignis in December.

Soon, Final Fantasy XV will receive its full wealth of planned content, just in time for its imminent PC release in “early 2018.” Look forward to Comrades coming on November 15—as long as there aren’t any more delays.

Matt Mersel: There are a lot of things I love in this world—movies, music, Game of Thrones, a nice homecooked meal—but I love few things as much as video games. They're one of the final frontiers of art, and esports figures to be one of the biggest industries of the century. Everyone should care, and it's my job to show people why.
