Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Patch Changes Controversial Menu

Along with a host of bug fixes, the latest patch for Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth quietly updated a notoriously confusing menu that had players losing significant progress.

When a player loses a battle, the menu previously provided players with four options: “Retry from Before Current Battle,” “Retry from This Battle,” “Retry from Before Battle,” and “Resume.” There is little distinction between these options, making it confusing as to where players would end up when they chose an option.

Notably, the option to retry from before the current battle will put players in a more recent state than the option to retry from this battle, though it would logically be the opposite. Choosing the wrong option has sent players back to the very start of long, multi-phase battles.

Though it does not appear in the patch notes for Version 1.030, the update changed the phrasing of single option in the menu to make it much more user-friendly. Instead of prompting players to “Retry Before Current Battle,” the first option now reads “Retry from Current Phase,” as spotted by a user in the game’s subreddit.
