Final Fantasy 14 Offers Promo Codes Via 7-Eleven in Japan; Causes Stores to Sell Out of Soft Drinks

As Japan’s second-most popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV understandably has a firm influence on exactly what a large portion of Japan’s gamer base will do in the good name of character customization. So what happens when you offer promos for various in-game items – such as a regal white Fat Chocobo mount and a nifty maid/butler outfit – via soft drink purchases made at 7-Eleven stores? Fans will rush out to purchase their fair share of soft drinks, with more ardent Final Fantasy XIV fans purchasing an entire store’s worth of beverages.

And that’s exactly what happened last week in Japan.

And then, tragedy strikes.

This may sound like chaos, but the complete liquidation of enjoyable liquids seems to be limited to a few isolated cases.

The Square Enix/7-Eleven collaboration was initially announced during last month’s Final Fantasy XIV Letter, wherein the FFXIV development team discusses various aspects of the game and teases future events. This collaboration, which has been running since April 1 and will continue until April 30 in Japan, offers players the chance to earn a smattering of unique cosmetics only available through the event.

Here’s how it works: By purchasing a soft drink at a 7-Eleven, players will receive a special code on their receipt that can be redeemed on the campaign’s site for points. These points can then be spent to acquire various rewards in Final Fantasy FXIV, which range from a set of fireworks at 5 points, to a mask of a Primal at 11 points, to the coveted housekeeper costumes at 14 points.

Additionally, there are two separate groups of rewards. Included in Group A are a mask of the Primal (and legendary decmolisher of uncoordinated raids) Titan, and the aforementioned maid outfit. Group B seems to contain a mask of Ifrit and the Butler outfit.

After completing both Group A and B, players will be rewarded with a white Fat Chocobo mount, which is adorned with a fittingly-unfitting tiny king’s crown.

Check out some of the rewards below:

Though this Final Fantasy XIV promo is slated to come to regions outside of Japan, no word has yet been given on just when and where event will strike next. Keep your fingers crossed for Fat Chocobos!
