Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star E3 Demo

A demo version of the upcoming game Fate/Extella, which has had its name localized in North America to Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star. The game plays like a typical hack and slash game with a very “kawaii” aesthetic to it. The player is presented with an onslaught of enemies that they must hack their way through in order reach end goals and objectives. In this game the amount of enemies that are thrown at the player is rather over the top. At times the screen can be completely filled with enemies almost burying the player in a sea of them. The game works with the player killing “aggressors” who are the true targets of the game with the other vast amount of normal enemies being there only as an obstacle. The player can limit the amount of these enemies by destroying the “factories” that they are spewing from. While destroying these does not totally eliminate these enemies it does cut down the amount of tie the player would need to spend hacking through them otherwise. The player has to collect what appear to be microchips from the various areas in the game and essentially need to capture these points before they are over run by the “aggressors.” The player can also build up special moves that allow them to take out hundreds of the enemies at a time. It seems like it would be most effective for the player to save this attack for a boss fight in order to deal as much damage as quickly as possible, but it also works to get the payer out of a tight situation if they were unable to destroy enough “factories” and have their area overrun by enemies.

The addition of a point capture mechanism adds an interesting element to what is a pretty straight forward genre. This game seems like it would be most enjoyable for people who are already into this genre of hack and slash game. Based on my experience with the game, it would not be a good starting point for someone who is not already familiar with the play style and strategy inherent in these kinds of games.

The game is set for a North American release sometime in Winter of 2017 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.
