Fate/Extra is a 2010 portable game that takes place in the Fate franchise, where a Holy Grail War would take place, and mages would summon heroic figures to do battle in a battle royal, and the winner would claim the Holy Grail and receive a wish. And in 2020, Fate/Extra Record was announced as a remake of the 2010 portable game and remained quiet for a long time until September 3rd, during PlayStation State of Play, when we got the official release-date announcement trailer. Fate/Extra Record is set to launch on January 28th, 2027, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC via Steam. The game will receive both digital and physical releases, with a special limited edition.
Fate/Extra Record is a remake of Fate/Extra, the 2010 portable game in which a Holy Grail War took place on the moon, dubbed the “Moon Holy Grail War.” The Holy Grail War on the moon is in part due to humanity discovering a supercomputer hidden on the moon. Known as the Moon Cell Automaton, this powerful computer created the Holy Grail, an omnipotent machine capable of granting any wish. Thus began the Holy Grail War, a tournament taking place in SE.RA.PH, a digital world constructed by the Moon Cell Automaton. In this war, 218 contestants due battle: a master and a servant, that servant being a hero drawn from human history, who will help them fight to claim the Holy Grail and fulfill their wish. And at the center of it all is a master with no memory, so your only choice to survive is to contract a servant and do battle.
To survive, you must learn to navigate the war itself. Gather information on your enemy: The key to victory is identifying the enemy Servant. The Servant’s True Name is a crucial piece of information, as it will be tied to their combat style and weakness. Uncover their true identity. You must also explore the arena; to qualify for a decisive battle, you must explore sections of the arena. Overcome traps and enemies on each floor to strengthen your servant. And it all comes down to the final battle, where the masters pit their servants in a one-on-one battle, where the losing master forfeits the tournament and their life, and the Holy Grail War ends when only one master remains.
And now, time for the meat and potatoes of the remake, as Fate/Extra Record has completely overhauled its combat system from the 2010 game. Combat now occurs through a customizable deck system, where players build different Command Decks through Commands, adding an extra layer of strategy to each encounter. There are three actions you can take during combat: the first is attack, which inflicts damage on enemies. Guard adds shields, decreasing damage taken, and finally skills, which have their own unique abilities. Each command differs from your chosen servant, as there are three in total you can choose from, each with their own abilities and strengths, so learning how to make the most of their individual talents can give you an edge in battle.
Fate/Extra Record is officially set for January 27th, 2027, and will be available for both PlayStation 4 and 5, Switch and Switch 2, and PC via Steam. The game will have a standard edition priced at $59.99 that includes only the game and will be available in both digital and physical formats. A limited edition, which is only physical, includes the game, a three-disc original soundtrack, and a steelbook. It also includes a Material / Art and Concept Book. And finally, the Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes the game, Fate/EXTRA Arranged Background Music Pack, Servant and Player Special Outfits Bundle, and Digital Soundtrack and Art Book, is around $79.99.
