Originally released last year in April of 2015 in Japan, JRPG Bravely Second will be released this Friday (and tax day–horray!) for the Nintendo 3DS. The upcoming game follows the same rules and world building as its 2012 predecessor, Bravely Default. Developed by Silicon Studio and published by Square Enix, this new JRPG is out now for roughly $70 USD.
The game takes players back into the dry, mountainous, fantasy land of Luxendarc, where everyone can utilize time based combat system to upgrade their characters along their journey. Taking its initial, main inspiration from iconic Square Enix Final Fantasy series, many agree that while it is missing a bit in explanation and story, it is entirely a worthy edition to the story of the ongoing series.
Reviews are overall good to favorable, with and a 7 out of 10 from Gamespot and Destructoid–some taking away points for weak cast in the face of a general favorable combat system, a fun, mystical world, and a continuation of the compelling story.
Repeating the same formula with Bravely Second just doesn’t have the same impact, especially when the cast isn’t as likable.
Similarly, Gamespot reviewers did not enjoy the new cast, furthering the point, saying:
The supporting cast doesn’t help much, either. Although they first poke fun at Yew, joining you in your disbelief, they soon add painful dialogue of their own.
Meanwhile, VentureBeat gave Bravely Second 90 out of 100, praising the game for its continuity of its world, battled system, and loveable, familiar characters–and despite Destructoid’s earlier, departing statement against the new game’s cast, VentureBeat argues oppositely stating:
All four of them are a likable bunch that play well of each other, and they get plenty of opportunities to interact among themselves via in-game cutscenes, optional party chats, and special scenes you can view inside Yew’s magical tent…
If you are looking for a quality combat system for a more than decent 3DS game, Bravely Second will be out this Friday, April 15th, for all American regions, for the price of $70 USD.
