Just as technological advancements have helped games look more realistic over the years, they have also allowed other titles take art in different directions to create unique styles that can help reinforce the themes of the game. The playful, drawing-like aesthetic of Fantasy Boy by Serafini Productions caught the attention of many when it was first announced in 2024. Now, the game has been announced to also be coming to PlayStation, with a new trailer also showing off more of the story and gameplay.
In the new trailer, the audience is introduced to the main character himself, appropriately named Boy in the game’s Steam page. It follows one of the most classic stories in video games, with his peaceful day getting interrupted by news of a princess kidnapping. Being a knight in training, he immediately sets out across the various areas of the land such as the Wooded Kingdom and Deep Swamp to rescue her from the dragon. The trailer also introduces characters intent on helping the young knight through his journey like a girl with glowing fists.
The gameplay revealed sticks closely to the history of action platformers that came before it, with the sword acting as the primary means of attack while the player jumps and move to the right through the level. Along the way, he encounters enemies like pig monsters, jumping fish, and scorpions with different behaviors and health. In addition to standard gameplay, the trailer also shows off a submarine section, various collectables like gold and treasures chests, and boss battles against large foes with patterns that encourage dodging. The trailer ends with a tense chase through the castle while the heroes flee from the dragon.
Throughout the trailer, Fantasy Boy doesn’t take itself too seriously, featuring lighthearted jokes that might appear in a child’s imagination, which works alongside the unique art style to create something similar to a playable children’s book. The game has no release date announced yet, and will be releasing on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC.
