The upcoming Fable reboot, which has been in development for several years now and reportedly began early production in 2023, is certainly one of the more anticipated releases coming from Xbox. Despite misogynistic comments made by toxic gamers and far-right journalists over the appearance of a female protagonist from the reveal trailer years back, many are still looking forward to its launch in February of 2027.
However, Fable may be running into some problems allegedly, that being related to it going “uncomfortably” over budget according to report from Windows Central. As Joshua Duckworth of GameRant has pointed out, many games in development are currently over budget, stating, “Development costs have ballooned, investment has shrunk, and development for many games has been hard-going since the COVID-19 pandemic”, but the wording of “uncomfortably” implies that Fable could possibly be surpassing even what most developers are dealing with budget-wise.
There is the added issue of the timing of its release as well, as it will be competing with the highly-anticipated God of War Laufey coming out February 16th, which is one day before the early access release for Fable. Fable was already delayed previously to avoid competing against Grand Theft Auto VI, which releases this November, so it would certainly be troublesome to delay the game a second time to avoid competing against God of War Laufey. While Fable will be a multi-platform release, it will also be released day one on Xbox Game Pass, which will be a good perk for those owning an Xbox. While we may be seeing an end to the brief era of multi-platform releases for what were formerly (and likely will return to being) console-exclusives (especially given Xbox is trying to find new ways to revitalize their brand), it’s important to remember that we don’t have to feed into the absurdity of console wars. Hopefully Fable and God of War Laufey can both prove to be good games that are loved by their fanbases and hold a positive legacy with their respective consoles.
