In recent gaming industry news, it has been announced that Epic Games has purchased a large mall in Cary, North Carolina in order to transform it into their national headquarters. In a recent blog update, it was announced that by 2024, Epic Games hopes to finish remodeling the Cary Towne Center, which has total surface area of 980,000 square feet and 87 acres, into a mix of recreational and office spaces. This overrode plans by the previous developers to repurpose the space with a mix of office, retail, and residential areas. This move is not a huge change for Epic as it has been based in Crossroads Boulevard in Cary for the past twenty years and will continue to be located there until the new campus is finished.
The Cary Town Center has been struggling in recent years, similar to most malls in America. In January of 2019, Turnbridge Equities and Denali Properties acquired the center for $31 million after three of the five main tenets left. Reportedly, Epic later bought this mall for $95 million. However, Cary’s mayor is optimistic about this new development project and its impact on the local community.
We’re extremely proud that Epic has chosen to call Cary home for their new global headquarters, and we greatly appreciate the company’s recognition of Cary’s existing assets as well as the unlimited potential of the area for their growing business … We look forward to continuing to work closely and collaboratively with the Epic team as they conceptualize their new campus, and we’re honored to partner with them on this exciting new development.
While development will begin later this year, we still have a number of years to go before the new headquarters become a reality. Currently, the Epic Games Store is running their annual holiday sale with some games being up to 75% off until January 7.
