Embracer Group Acquires Limited Run Games, Singtrix, Lord of The Rings IP Rights

Embracer Group recently announced a surprising series of acquisitions, with one of its prominent reveals being the acquisition of Limited Run Games. Limited Run Games is a video game publisher and distributor based in North Carolina, USA. Limited Run Games its notable for its focus on physical releases for games and beloved for it among collectors. Lars Wingefors, CEO of Embracer Group, expressed his excitement at the acquisition.

”As an avid collector, I’ve admired Limited Run’s collectors’ editions. They’ve built a strong brand that resonates with players. We see opportunities for Limited Run to further grow their business with the Carbon Engine by bringing back classic games, and extend their footprint geographically through synergies with other companies within Embracer Group.”

Limited Run Games offers the technology that is perfectly suited for game preservation, something that Embracer Group is highly invested in. Limited Run’s Carbon Engine, as mentioned above, helps ease the transition for retro-titles to modern platforms. According to the press release, the Carbon Engine creates “highly accurate, emulation-based ports for modern platforms.” According to the press release, Limited Run will operate within a newly formed subsidiary called Embracer Freemode.

Among its other acquisitions, Embracer seems to be branching out towards the music sphere with its acquisition of Singtrix. Based in Los Angeles, Singtrix is a leader in vocal processing effects technology for karaoke, gaming, and entertainment. Singtrix is notable for its history in the development of music games, and its work “as the first to patent the core technology behind the Guitar Hero Franchise.” Lee Guinchard, CEO of Freemode gave his own thoughts on this acquisition in the press release:

“The Singtrix team is one of the most highly regarded innovators in music gaming, vocal processing, and entertainment. Their proven track record behind groundbreaking mass music franchises and inspiring singing experiences is without parallel and makes them a perfect fit for Freemode’s plan to vastly expand its entertainment offerings.”

Finally in one of its strangest acquisitions yet, Embracer Group is now in an agreement to acquire Middle-earth Enterprises, who owns intellectual property rights to the The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Lars Wingefors gave his thoughts on this important acquisition.

I am truly excited to have The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, one of the world’s most epic fantasy franchises join the Embracer family, opening up more transmedia opportunities including synergies across our global group. I am thrilled to see what lies in the future for this IP with Freemode and Asmodee as a start within the group. Going forward, we also look forward to collaborating with both existing and new external licensees of our increasingly stronger IP portfolio.

2022 continues to be an eventful year for Embracer Group. As one of the few organizations leading the charge in game preservation, these acquisitions give the holding company more room to further their goals and branch out into other areas.

Caitlyn Taylor: New media and entertainment have been apart of my life since I was very young, and I don't think that interest will ever go away. When I'm bored, I immerse myself in lore videos no matter the length.
