EA Play Live Recap: Star Wars Squadrons Gameplay, New EA Originals, A Sneak Peak At Next-Gen Titles, & A New Skate Revealed

Today, EA showcased and revealed new games and announcements at EA Play Live. In addition to the gameplay reveal of Star Wars: Squadrons, Apex Legends is getting a new event, coming to a new platform and is one of many titles getting crossplay; multiple games were announced for Steam,  And they gave a small tease of how some of their games will look on the next-generation consoles.

The next Collection Event for Season 5 of Apex Legends is called Lost Treasures and begins next week on June 23. In addition to the new cosmetics, a new limited-time mode is coming to the game. Armed and Dangerous Evolved is the return of snipers and shotguns only, but with a twist. All armor is Evo armor and all of the Respawn Beacons will be removed from the map. A new Mobile Respawn Beacon item will be used to bring teammates back into the fight. One will be available at the start of the match and it’s up to the players to choose when and where teammates will reenter the map. Lost Treasures also features a new Town Takeover, Crypto’s map room. Players can get a closer look at what drives Crypto to compete in the arena that is Apex Legends. The game is coming to Steam and Nintendo Switch this fall. Crossplay between all the platforms is also coming this fall.

The Sims 4, Titanfall 2, A Way Out, and Dead Space 3 are part of five EA games that are available on Steam right now. EA also said that new releases will be coming to Steam too. Seven new games will be coming to Nintendo Switch in the next 12 months. Crossplay was also mentioned to be coming to more EA games after the last update in Need For Speed: Heat added the feature.

Three new EA Originals games were announced. The next game from Hazelight, the developers of A Way Out and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, is called It Takes Two, a co-op action-adventure platformer. The game is set to release in 2021. Zoink Games, developer of Fe announced Lost in Random, a coming of age story set in a gothic fairy tale world that looks like it came from the mind of Tim Burton. The game follows Even and her companion Dicey as they fight a world where randomness is feared and everything is controlled. Rocket Arena, the first game from Final Strike Games was announced. It’s a multiplayer shooter where every character fights with rockets.  The game is set to release on July 14 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game will support crossplay and the first season starts on July 28 and will bring new maps, new in-game events, a new character, and a blast pass, their version of a battle pass.

New details were revealed for Star Wars: Squadrons including the setup for the story mode where players will take control of two pilots, a New Republic pilot, and an Imperial pilot. The story alternates pilots throughout the story mission to mission. There are eight ships that players can choose from 4 classes: Fighter, Interceptor, Support, and Bomber. There are two main multiplayer modes. Dogfight mode is a 5v5 battle between Squadrons. Fleet Battles is the signature mode for Star Wars: Squadrons. They’re multi-staged conflicts that can be played solo or with friends. Squadrons compete to take out the enemy’s flagship. The game is coming out on October 2.

Lastly, we got a first look at what EA titles will look like for next-gen. There was a montage for Madden NFL 21 and FIFA 21 as well as short teasers for what Criterion, Bioware, and DICE are working on. The event wrapped with the announcement of a new Skate game.
