Last year’s Battlefield 1 was an unexpectedly popular shooter. There were some doubts that taking the modern military shooter back to the trench warfare and desert battles of World War I would be a good move. Fortunately for EA, it turned out to be one of the best and most successful shooters of 2016. Now, EA and DICE have announced on Twitter that they will follow up this success with another Battlefield game in 2018. Not much is know about this upcoming entry (it doesn’t even have an official title yet), so there’s much speculation if this will build on Battlefield 1‘s WWI setting, or go in a different direction.
Seeing as Battlefield 1 is still receiving DLC and the developers at DICE are busy working on Star Wars Battlefront II, its unlikely that any concrete details for this new Battlefield game will be released until at least early 2018. While nothing is certain, several of the responses on Twitter were begging for a new installment in the Bad Company series, Battlefield‘s comedic spinoff series which lampooned many modern military shooters. Others suggested that a World War II setting would be interesting too.
It also seems that EA might be going back on their word, as back in 2016, EA’s chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said that EA “won’t have another Battlefield back for a couple of years,” instead choosing to focus on Star Wars Battlefront II. Of course, this was only a month after Battlefield 1’s release, so perhaps EA wasn’t expecting the WWI shooter to turn into the massive success it is now.
Star Wars Battlefront II will release on November 17th for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. For new updates on the upcoming Battlefield title, stay tuned to mxdwn Games.
