E3 Reveals Xbox 360 and Xbox Titles will no Longer be Released for Backward Compatibility

There has been some somber news revealed at E3 that Xbox One will no longer receive new backward compatible games. This unfortunate news followed by some reassurance that Project Scarlett will also have backward compatibility and this will include games from all four generations. If your favorite game never made the cut for Xbox One you can still look forward to all the games that will be playable on Scarlett.

Xbox One has more that 600 titles from the Xbox and Xbox 360 that can be played as of now. All of these games are optimized to play and look better on the Xbox One. The time and effort it takes to make this all possible is no easy task and it is now time to move on and look to the future of gaming. This means that there will be no more titles added to the long list of games but fortunately there was one last batch of games announced that will join the backward team.

The Xbox games being added:

  • Armed and Dangerous
  • Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb
  • Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent
  • Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict

The Xbox 360 games being added:

  • Asura’s Wrath
  • Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
  • Enchanted Arms
  • Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
  • Far Cry Classic
  • Far Cry Instincts Predator
  • Infinite Undiscovery
  • Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie
  • Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands
  • Skate
  • Star Ocean: The Last Hope
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Syndicate
  • Too Human
  • Unreal Tournament III

It’s unfortunate that we’ll not see any more titles like these but the reasoning behind the shift in focus is a valid one. The team is promising that Project Scarlett will not only have all of the current 600 titles also playable on the system, it will also have every Xbox One title playable on the system as well. If they take as much time to polish every Xbox One game as much as they do the current titles, Project Scarlett will have a strong arsenal of games and that will be a huge accomplishment.

Microsoft has made a strong impression for fans this year at E3 with new titles and the news for  the future with backward compatibility. Even if you are not an Xbox fan, it would be hard not to admire the effort they put into keeping classics alive for their fellow players.

Nathan Arquiette: Mom and Dad would never buy me a gaming console growing up, so I bought my own Dreamcast when I was 10 years old. Ever since then my passion for gaming went wild. Why watch a movie or read a book when you can take part in the plot playing a game was my philosophy. "Video games rot your brain" but I had a 10th grade reading level in the 6th grade all thanks to RPG's. Talking and writing about games is something I will never get tired of.
