E3 2014: New Teaser Photo For Mirror’s Edge 2

With E3 here many game companies are making the effort to reach out to their customers and advertise their newest wares. DICE is joining in on the action with new teaser images for Mirror’s Edge 2.

After the surprise announcement at the 2013 E3 that DICE and Electronic Arts were planning a sequel to the 2008 parkour-based first person not-so-shoot-’em’-up Mirror’s Edge, many fans of the series were ready to absorb any and all information they could get their hands on about the title. Sadly, news has been relatively quiet — until now. Just in time for E3, the DICE team working on the sequel and Electronic Arts have tweeted a new teaser image for the upcoming title, showcasing artwork highly reminiscent of the original.

The original Mirror’s Edge was an interestingly experimental title. Featuring a combination of FPS and platforming elements infused with parkour and a futuristic aesthetic, the game gained a significant cult following thanks to its creative gameplay and emphasis on nonlethal combat mechanics. The story followed the adventures of Faith as she roamed the city, leaping between buildings and dodging angry security everywhere she seemed to go. While not as great a commercial success as its developers had hoped for, the title nevertheless captured the hearts of many gamers.

The new sequel, whose working title is simply Mirror’s Edge as well, is set to be a prequel to the original, expanding on Faith’s backstory and fleshing out the game’s world. The teaser image features an aesthetic that will be very familiar to fans of the original, with the same stark contrast and limited palette returning. At E3 2013 the title was said to be coming to the then-next-gen console as well as PC. Now that the next gen has become the current gen, it will be interesting to see what changes the developers make to the game’s looks and mechanics to work with the enhanced capabilities of modern systems.

Gamers have been waiting more than five years for news on the Mirror’s Edge sequel. With DICE and Electronic Arts having an important showing at E3 this year, many people are holding out hope that more information will be made available concerning the title, including what confirmation of what platforms it will be available on and maybe even a potential release date. Until they give us more information, all we can hope for is a release some time soon, and a game that can live up to the quirky, experimental legacy of its predecessor.
