Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Director Apologizes for Long Wait, States that Ideas for the Title Came From Late Night Meetings With His Team

As we wind down the final days of 2023, there is plenty to look forward to going into 2024. One of which is the highly anticipated Dragon’s Dogma 2, a sequel that has been several years in the making. The title is set to be released on March 22, 2024, which is only few months away. Regarding the long wait, as well as how they were able to come up with some ideas, director Hideki Itsuno recently revealed in an interview with Play magazine, which was transcribed by GamesRadar, that some of the better features were thought up during the team’s late night meetings.

Itsuno clarified that the development team did meet during the day, but they also decided to brainstorm late into the night to see if that changed any perspective. Turns out, a change of scenery does wonders for some. “We held multi-day sessions where the team came up with ideas for things that could happen in the game, and the funniest ideas were always the ones people came up with when our work kept us up late at night,” Itsuno said. Regarding the long wait for the sequel, Itsuno apologized to the fans for taking so much time but wanted to ensure that it was done the right way.

He also mentioned that the fans themselves were a major factor in making Dragon’s Dogma 2 a reality. “I’ve been so grateful to see so many fans appreciate the quality of the game and support it for so many years. Having fans support the game – both inside Capcom and out – is definitely something that helped push the project towards realization,” he said. While Dragon’s Dogma, which originally launched in 2012, was generally well received, it didn’t exactly set the industry on fire. However, what many thought would end up being a one-off project for Capcom, ended up becoming one of the most endured IPs that the company would release.

This was mostly due to the re-releases, with a PC port coming in 2016, a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One edition in 2017, and even a Nintendo Switch release in 2019. With the fanbase keeping the title alive, and newer players discovering it in the process, Capcom eventually saw the writing on the wall and greenlit a sequel, more than 11 years after the first entry launched. The title is already one of the most wanted entries of 2024, as it became one of the best sellers on Steam, despite being a pre-order.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 will officially launch on March 22, 2024, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
