Did you know Dragon Age: The Veilguard is going to have a release date announced today? No? Well you’re not alone, ever since Dragon Age: The Veilguard had its official reveal and gameplay trailer two months ago it’s been nothing but radio silence from Bioware. An odd decision, considering that Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set to release this year on October 31st, a very short way away. But there might be a reason for that, recently video game icon Game Informer was shut down after 33 years in the business, and it looks like Game Informer took Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s marketing campaign with it to its grave.
Not exactly the situation you want when you’re pushing out the latest title in a big name IP that is barely clinging on to life after a decade plus of layoffs, delays, and cutting room floors. Bioware as a company hasn’t had a unanimously beloved game since Mass Effect 2 in 2010, and Dragon Age itself hasn’t had a universally loved title arguably since Dragon Age: Origins in 2009. So the fact that the trailer for this latest foray into Thedas was met with pretty negative critical responses followed by absolutely nothing on the marketing front must really sting for Bioware and for the team who put all this hard work into this game, and even Dragon Age’s valiant Twitter account is linking to dead and deleted articles and tweets since Game Informer went under.
This is not the greatest look for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The series needs all the help it can possibly get but it seems like it has been hit with nothing but bad luck time and time again for the past ten years, and this Game Informer situation, possibly the first case of this happening, seems like a cruel joke on top of everything that’s happened.
