Nintendo’s latest mobile title, Dr. Mario World, based on the Super Mario Bros. spin-off franchise Dr. Mario, has released on iOS and Android a day early. Originally, the game was set to launch on mobile devices tomorrow, July 10, but Twitter user @Wario64 first noticed the game on the App Store earlier this morning. A couple hours later, it appeared on the Google Play Store.
The game is free-to-play, but contains a fair amount of microtransactions. Like other games of its kind, Dr. Mario World only allows players a limited number of tries to play through levels. Once the player runs out of tries, they will either have to wait for the game to restock their tries or purchase in-game currency using real-world money.
The in-game currency, Diamonds, can also be used to buy different items, new characters to play as (such as Dr. Yoshi, Dr. Peach, and Dr. Toad), or additional capsules if the player runs out before finishing the level. Diamonds will be available for purchase in different packs, starting with 20 for $2 USD, ranging all the way up to 1050 for $70 USD.
New doctors and assistant characters can also be obtained via a randomized gacha system, which requires Diamonds or coins (which players earn over the course of the game) to play. Twitter user @ravennoises noted that earning enough coins to pull a new character from the gacha system takes longer than expected, as it took them playing through over 20 levels to obtain the 4,000 coins needed for one gacha pull.
Dr. Mario World isn’t the only Nintendo mobile title releasing this summer. Mario Kart Tour, which has been in beta-testing in Japan, is supposed to come out sometime this summer, after Nintendo delayed its initial March 2019 release to summer 2019.
Dr. Mario World is now out on the App Store and Google Play.
