If you backed Broken Age back before it was in development, then you were aware of a special thing developer Double Fine did for them They documented the development of the game from its conception as a Kickstarter in 2012 to its release of Act Two in 2015. The result was Double Fine Adventure, a twenty-episode journey that showed both the method and madness of game design. Today, Double Fine has announced the release of a second documentary, Double Fine PscyOdyssey, dealing with the development of its latest title, Psychonauts 2.
This was always in the cards. It’s part of the Fig pitch! When you backed the game, you also helped support the creation of the series. And now we’re pleased to announce the release of Double Fine PsychOdyssey, a twisting trip into the minds that made Psychonauts 2 and the highs (and lows!) that come from an extended game development process,” Double Fine said.
Through thirty-two episodes, Double Fine and 2 Player Productions chronicle Psychonauts and Double Fine’s journey from the initial fig pitch through a large acquisition by Microsoft and through a global pandemic. Double Fine PsychOdyssey took over five thousand hours of footage filmed over six years and includes interviews, meetings both in-person and online, and playtests.
The series was released to backers first earlier today but the entire series is available to view on Double Fine’s official YouTube channel.
“Now that the Double Fine PsychOdyssey has arrived, our focus will turn to some fresh creations and the Fig campaign’s final slew of rewards, ” Double Fine said. “Various disruptions throughout the world in the last few years greatly affected the production and shipping of some items and we acknowledge that many of you have been patiently awaiting some more goodies. We will share more information as it becomes available as we prepare for the distribution of these last waves of items. We appreciate your understanding in this matter!
For now? Please enjoy Double Fine PsychOdyssey and a look at Psychonauts 2’s journey from pitch to release. We couldn’t have made it without your amazing support, and hope that this close-up of the development process is entertaining, educational, emotional, and exciting!”
