One of the most influential video game designers of all time is working on a brand new project. John Romero has announced that his studio, Romero Games, is now hiring for a new First Person Shooter title. The studio, which was founded by Romero and his wife Brenda Romero in 2015, is apparently working with a “major publisher” and made the announcement with a link to his site where potential developers can apply for the job listings associated with design, engineering, and art.

As you can see in the tweet above, Romero is looking for anyone who is experienced in video game development, specifically when utilizing Unreal Engine 5. No further information was given as to what else we can expect for this brand new IP, but if John Romero is involved, then the experience alone is more than likely going to be worth it, especially for an FPS project. The last piece of content that Romero produced by himself and released was Sigil, an unofficial add-on to the original Doom. Romero also revealed Sigil 2, which will be built on the Doom 2 engine, or the Doom Engine, albeit without a release date.
Romero’s line of work has been well documented over the better part of 30-plus years, as he is often considered one of the most important and crucial developers in the entire video game industry. His career began in the late 1980s but took off in earnest in 1991 when he, John Carmack, Tom Hall, and Adrian Carmack founded id Software. They went onto release Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake in 1992, 1993, and 1996 respectively. All three titles spawned an entirely new style of gameplay in the FPS genre and literally took the video game world by storm with an impact that is still felt to this day.
The most recent release from Romero Games was Empire of Sin, a strategy and role-playing title that was made with the Unity Engine and launched in 2020. Hopefully, we’ll hear more about this new FPS title from Romero soon, but either way, we’re very excited to see one of the masters of the FPS genre back in the fray with a brand new entry.
