As we all know already, Doom Eternal was delayed until March 2020. While it’s disappointing that we won’t be getting our hands on it this year, we did get some updates on the game as well as a cool pre order bonus that was the technical sequel to Doom 64. The game was also confirmed as a stand alone release for the same day, and Bethesda has just released a brief, yet beautiful announcement trailer to reaffirm that.

For those who don’t know, Doom 64 is the 1997 Nintendo 64 port of the wildly popular PC game Doom. It was a decent port, but due to the technical limitations of the 64, it wasn’t compared favorably to it’s PC counterpart. Still, it was quite a marvel to actually play the game on a cartridge, and on a Nintendo system no less. The visual difference is obvious right from the beginning in the trailer, as the first person camera speeds around the room with little to no issue. The graphics themselves easily look much better than it’s 23 year old predecessor, but some of the sprites in the trailer do stick out just a tad bit.
Despite that, it’s definitely worth checking out, as we already mentioned that this will be included as a special pre-order bonus with Doom Eternal. Speaking of which it was previously announced that Doom 64 would be releasing for the Nintendo Switch. It was later revealed that the title would also be coming out for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC as well, during the update/delay announcement by id Software.
In the same post, we learned that the Switch port of Doom Eternal would be coming at a later time. Now, the standalone version of Doom 64 will be released on the same day as Eternal’s new launch date for the other systems. However, if you pre-order the game for the Switch, then you’ll need to wait for Eternal to release for that console in order to claim your copy of 64. For those who pre-ordered on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, you’ll get the game on March 20, 2020.
Doom 64 officially launches on March 20, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and on the Nintendo Switch at a later date. No price was given for the standalone version at this time. You can check out the official launch trailer here:
